We didn’t invent hospitality — we inherited it.
Our story begins in early 1900s Chicago with our great-grandfather, Julius Beck, and his three brothers: Ed, Henry, and Hugo. The four of them ran Beck Brothers, a bar, wholesale wine & liquor business, and cigar-making operation right out of their own building at 308 N. Franklin Street. The bar sat on the ground floor; the family lived upstairs. Every night, the same wooden counter welcomed neighbors, travelers, and regulars who came not just for a drink, but for the feeling of walking into a place where they were known by name.
We grew up hearing these stories and looking at the same faded photographs you see here: the Leopold Beck family portrait, the three young brothers standing shoulder-to-shoulder, the multi-story building on Franklin Street with the bar below and residence above, and the original Beck Brothers business card that proudly announced “Rectifiers and Wholesale Dealers in Wines and Liquors.”
Today we’re carrying the legacy forward — not with whiskey and cigars, but with something equally social and soul-warming: specialty coffee.
They imported fine wines and liquors, specialized in Kentucky whiskeys, and rolled their own cigars in the back. But the real product was never just what was in the glass or the humidor — it was the welcome. The conversation. The way Julius and his brothers made every customer feel like they belonged at the family table. That same building housed both their business and their home, so hospitality wasn’t a job; it was simply how they lived.
